On Zoe’s Tenth Birthday

Our oldest daughter, Zoe, will be ten years old on Sunday.

It hardly seems like ten years.

Some details of Zoe’s adoption are so hardwired in me that I can not only remember them…I can feel them.   Getting the call.  Making airline reservations for the next morning.  Even walking off the jetway in Las Vegas.

My big “aha…” moment happened days later, though.   We already had Zoe out of the hospital and were waiting in a hotel to get the paperwork finished to fly home. I had gone down to the hotel laundry facilities to get some things out of the dryer.  They weren’t quite finished, so I sat on a table and watched the clothes tumble.

I suddenly realized how many little pink things were spinning around in that dryer.  Little socks, little onesies, all different shades of a color that just wasn’t a part of our normal laundry (with three older boys).  It was then that I knew life was forever changed.

Happy Birthday, Zoe.  You are a world changer for many.

If you’re thinking about adoption, maybe this is the year that you find your world changer too.
